The art collections of the Vatican are among the richest and most important in the world. The Galleries, Buildings and Museums of the Vatican contain thousands of masterpieces -- ranging from sculptures of classical antiquity through the frescoes and paintings of the Renaissance to modern works of art. To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the founding of the Vatican Museums, the oldest of the world's great museums, the 100 outstanding art treasures of the Vatican were selected with the assistance of an Advisory Board, composed of nine Curators and Historians of the Vatican.

The 100 medal set was available from 1976 to 1984.
