A nationwide art competition, with a total of $500,000 in prize money, was held to select the obverse (front) designs of the 50 medals. A separate panel of judges, composed of distinguished citizens of each state, was appointed to choose the winning designs. There were more than 13,000 nation-wide entries in the contest. Each medal is a prize-winning work of art, and the complete collection reflects the special character of each of our United States. The reverse design of each medal was selected by the Bicentennial Commission of that state. Each medal measures 39mm or about 1-1/2 inches across.
This is one of the more common Franklin Mint sets.
